What is Casual Trading?
Casual Trading means selling goods at a place (including a public road) to which the public have access as a right or at any other place that is a casual trading area.
The designated casual trading areas in Co. Limerick are located in the towns of Newcastlewest and Abbeyfeale.
Newcastle West
- Fee for Casual Trading Licence €349.18 (Annual Fee) and takes place 2 days per week.
- Casual Trading Licence holders must have Public Liability Insurance indemnifying Limerick County Council in the sum of not less than €6.3 million.
- A Register of Casual Trading Licences issued by Limerick County Council is available for viewing in Newcastlewest Area Office.
Abbeyfeale
- Fee for Casual Trading Licence €253.95 (Annual Fee) and takes place 1 day per week.
- Casual Trading Licence holders must have Public Liability Insurance indemnifying Limerick County Council in the sum of not less than €6.3 million.
- A Register of Casual Trading Licences issued by Limerick County Council is available for viewing in Newcastlewest Area Office
How to Apply- Casual Trading Licence
Applications must be received in writing to the Newcastlewest Area Office. Details are then placed on a waiting list for the Licence
What is a Special Event Licence?
A Special Event Licence (Casual Trading Act 1995) Application Form can be obtained by contacting the Environment Section of Limerick County Council or downloaded below (PDF documents on this site require Adobe Acrobat Reader which can be downloaded at the following link:- www.adobe.com).
How to Apply – Special Event Licence e.g. Festivals
- Fee: €25.39 per event
- If the person or Company is selling food, a Food Stall Licence is required.
- When the above has been received, it must be referred to the Area Engineer and to the Gardai for observations/objections.
- If the Gardai and Area Engineer are satisfied with the application, the licence is issued.
- The Gardai and Area Engineer may make recommendations regarding Litter Control or Traffic, these conditions must be included in the Licence.
- Limerick County Council require proof of Public Liability insurance indemnifying Council for €6.4m).
Casual Trading does not include:
- Selling by auction
- Selling to a person at the place where he resides or carries on business
- Selling in respect of which it is shown by the seller that the profits are for charity and not private profit and that the seller will not receive gain or profit
