Green Schools

Green schools is an international project designed to encourage and acknowledge whole school action for the environment. Green schools offers a well defined controllable way for pupils to take environmental issues from the curriculum and apply them to the day to day running of the school. This process will help your pupils recognise the importance of environmental issues and take them more seriously in their personal and home lives. Green schools is both a programme and an awards scheme. The programme can be adopted by any school using the guidelines given in the Green Schools Handbook. The award will be given to schools which complete the seven steps of the programme. The Green Schools Awards Schemes helps schools to:

  • Improve the school environment

  • Reduce litter & waste

  • Reduce energy bills

  • Increase environmental awareness

  • Foster links with the local community

  • Gain local publicity

  • Create links with other schools in Ireland and internationally.

The programme is managed by An Taisce - The National Trust for Ireland and is run in co-operation with Limerick County Council in County Limerick. Over 115 schools in County Limerick are now registered with the programme, and to date, approx. 80 flags have been awarded across the county.
