Adopt-A-Bank

Ever visited a recycling centre and found bags, boxes and other material dumped at the recycling centre? To help local communities manage recycling facilities more effectively the Council has an "Adopt - a - Bank Scheme in place to encourage community groups to assist the Council with managing local facilities. Qualifying community/residential groups are paid an annual fee for assisting the Council with keeping the bring centre litter free.

Limerick County Council has established a network of bring centres across the County. These bring centres accept a range of waste streams from glass bottles & jars, aluminium drinks cans, steel food cans and textiles.

Our experience is that bring centres can be subject to abuse, including illegal dumping of household waste at the sites, householders not placing recyclables in the banks, but leaving them in bags and boxes.

The requirements for participation in the scheme are listed below. Groups must register using the attached form. Payments for groups adopting the banks will be payable to the community group rather than an individual member of the community group.

Requirements of the Adopt - a - Bank Scheme

  1. The group must be actively engaged in a community activity in the area in which they wish to adopt a bank.
  2. Groups will be restricted to adopting one bring centre only for the first year.
  3. Applications to adopt banks will be considered on a “first come first served” basis.
  4. Groups will agree to undertake the maintenance of the banks for a minimum period of 1 year.
  5. At the end of this period, the agreement between the Council and the group will be reviewed.
  6. Community Groups will designate a specified contact person in the group for dealing with general correspondence etc.
  7. Groups will agree to undertake the following duties:
    • Any recyclables left at the bring centre will be placed in the appropriate bank.
    • If illegal dumping occurs at the bring centre, the group must advise the Council immediately so an investigation into the dumping can be undertaken.
    • Any plastic bags or boxes left at the bring centres will be placed in appropriate litter bins.
    • Groups are required to advise the Council or appropriate contact when the Banks are approaching capacity, i.e. if almost full.
    • The groups will give advice & assistance to members of the public in relation to recycling at the Bring Facility.
