Litter and the Law

“Don’t litter and don’t tolerate those who do

The definition of litter is very broad and includes the obvious items like crisp bags, bottles, cans, etc.; but it also includes items such as cigarette butts and chewing gum. It can also include items/articles that are not intended as waste but which are or may become unsightly.

The Protection of the Environment Act 2003 contains a number of amendments to the Litter Pollution Act 1997, which enhanced local authority powers in the area of litter control and enforcement.

Limerick County Council has published a new Litter and the Law leaflet as a practical guide to the litter laws. So know your responsibilities for taking action against litter!
