Litter pollution is a major threat to the quality of the physical environment. It is very visible and detracts from the clean and green image which Ireland has fostered.
Under Section 10 of the Litter Pollution Act 1997 as amended, Limerick County Council is obliged to prepare and implement a Litter Management Plan for its functional area.
Limerick County Council published its first Litter Management Plan in 1998. The Fourth Plan "A Vision for the Future" sets out the objectives and strategies of the Litter Control Unit for the period 2011 to 2014.
