Under the 1998 Phosphorous Regulations, there is an obligation on the County Council to achieve a significant improvement in river water quality by 2007. This will be achieved through a program of farm inspections, licensing of industry and the on-going upgrading of sewage treatment plants.
The Phosphorus Regulations require local authorities to prepare Phosphorus Implementation Reports, outlining progress towards combating phosphorus pollution, with targeted reduction of phosphorus for Rivers and Lakes.
