Newcastle West Demesne
The Demesne is a large area of amenity parkland located adjacent to the Town Centre and providing leisure and sporting facilities. Over the past number of years the Council has been conducting works throughout the parkland including new walkways, planting trees, clearing away overgrown bush’s and the building of a new bridge over the river which flows through the parkland. Works also included upgrading the Avenue access to the Demesne at Churchtown.
Launch of National Tree Week The National Tree Week, which runs this year from March 7th – 13th, is organised by the Tree Council of Ireland, and this year is sponsored jointly by Coillte and O2 Ireland. Every year, more than 15,000 trees are distributed by Local Authorities to Community Groups and planted throughout the Country.
To mark this special occasion in Newcastle West, a beautiful avenue of mature oak and beech trees, donated by Coillte and planted by Limerick County Council (shown in the above photograph), was formally dedicated to the Special Olympics, 2003, by An Cathaoirleach Mr. John Clifford, who formally launched National Tree Week, 2004, at a well attended tree-planting ceremony at the Demesne, Newcastle West, on Friday the 5th March. Father Frank Duhig performed a blessing ceremony before the unveiling. The Cathaoirleach, in his address, paid tribute to the various groups including Limerick County Council, Newcastle West Community Council, Arra Development Co. (Fás), Coillte and the Forest Service, who worked together in partnership at a local level to develop this beautiful avenue which would give an additional enhanced access to the Demesne. He made special mention of a grant of €33,000 just announced by the Forest Service for ongoing development at the Demesne.
