The office provides services to the Rathkeale Electoral area, which extends from the Ferry Bridge to Glin on the N69, from Clonshire to Coolanoran on the N21, and from Askeaton to Lee’s Cross on the R518. The Area includes the towns and villages of Rathkeale, Askeaton, Foynes, Glin, Pallaskenry, Loughill, Ballingarry, Kilcoleman, Cappagh, Ballysteen, Croagh and Kildimo. Housing and Sanitary services are also provided outside the Rathkeale electoral area in the Adare, Croom, Banogue and Fedamore areas.
Court services are provided for Askeaton, Adare and Rathkeale District Courts which sit monthly in Rathkeale, and Rathkeale Circuit Court which sits quarterly. Rathkeale is well known for its large travelling community, many of whom own houses and other properties in the town. Members of the travelling community are frequent visitors to the offices, and our services are provided with all due and appropriate consideration for the special cultural values and traditions of the people concerned.
Rathkeale is also renowned for the Palatine community, who are descendants of people who historically came from the Rhineland-Pfals region of Germany to settle in and around the Castle Matrix area. Many Palatine surnames survive in the local community, such as Orr, Bovenizer, Muller, Teskey, etc.
Rathkeale’s Main Street and side streets retain much of their 19th century character, with numerous residential and business premises of significant architectural merit.
