Areas that are Structurally Weak(Marked in Red)

The rural areas generally more distant from the major urban areas and the associated pressure from urban generated housing with significant population and economic decline. To help stem the decline and strengthen these structurally weak areas, in general, any demand for permanent residential development should be accommodated, subject to meeting normal planning and environmental criteria.

In relation to the designated Structurally Weak areas, the Planning Authority will have particular regard to the broader definition of sustainable development as set out in the ‘Sustainable Rural Housing Guidelines’ in considering proposals for single houses in these areas. When considering the suitability of individual sites, in addition to the normal planning criteria, the Planning Authority will take account of the scarcity of development when considering individual proposals in the context of road safety, public health and environmental considerations. An overriding consideration in all cases in these areas will be the need to reverse population decline.

It is the policy of Limerick County Council that any demand for permanent residential development should be accommodated as it arises, subject to normal planning criteria as outlined in the development guidelines.
