Do I Need Planning Permission?

If you want to develop any land you will require planning permission unless the development is specifically exempt from the need for permission. Development means "the carrying out of any works on, in or under land or the making of any material change in the use of any structure or other land". You must therefore apply for planning permission for the following forms of development::

  1. Developing any land including erecting any structure on it.
  2. Changing the use of any land or structure.
  3. Retaining any unauthorised structure.
  4. Continuing any unauthorised use of any land or structure. Details of exempted Development are available in Schedule 2 of the Local Government (Planning & Development) Regulations, 2001 to 2007.
