Site Assessments - Trial Hole and Percolation Test

In all cases where an application involves a proposal to use a septic tank or other on-site treatment system, a site assessment is required. The site assessments are carried out by private operators. The most up-to-date list of approved assessors is available on our website or you can request a list by post from our offices.

Applicants should ensure that the approved assessor surveys the lands for the proposed site/dwelling in order to advise on the most suitable location for a percolation area BEFORE carrying out the Trial Hole and Percolation Test. This will help to determine finding a suitable site for achieving the necessary percolation requirements.

Applicants are required  to have the site assessment carried out in advance of making a planning application. A planning application will be invalid if the assessment results are not submitted with the application.

**TEST RESULTS SHOULD ONLY BE SUBMITTED TO THE PLANNING
AUTHORITY WHEN MAKING A PLANNING APPLICATION**

Please note that when hiring of private operators to carry out a site assessment test you are entering into a private contract between you, the applicant, and the private assessor.
