Over the past number of years there was a boom in the construction industry which resulted in the construction of a large number of houses and retail units in County Limerick. As a result of this activity substantial funding became available to the Council by way of Development Contributions. These contributions are lodged to a separate Development Fund in the Council. The money in this Fund can only be used to provide improvements to infrastructural services in the County and cannot be used for day to day maintenance works. The Roads Department of the Council has been proactive in the past couple of years in utilising this source of funding to improve the local and regional roads infrastructure in the County. Details of the road improvements carried out over the past few years under this heading are outlined below.
Plassey Park Road Phase II* Improvements along 1.2km of Plassey Park Road which included footpaths, cycleways, public lighting, road markings and signage. Cost : €2.7m

Monaleen Road Improvements This scheme includes for improvement works on the Monaleen Road. Works include road pavement overlay, footpaths, public lighting, drainage, and traffic signals at Schoolhouse Road Junction, pedestrian crossing facilities, regulating of car parking and set down areas, road markings and signage.
*These schemes were part funded by the Department of Transport.
In addition to the above works a large number of smaller projects have been carried out in each of the five Roads Areas in the County over the past number of years utilising funding from the Development Fund.
Unfortunately due to the decline in the construction industry and the general downturn in the economy the Council has had to put plans for further road improvements under this heading on hold until further funding is made available.
