Limerick County Trunk Watermains – Croom Link is included in the Water Services Investment Programme 2007-2009 by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
A new water supply for the Patrickswell/Adare/Croom area will be provided via a link to the Limerick City Water Supply Scheme. The proposed trunk main system, substantially in place, from Castletroy to Patrickswell consists of 1,000 mm and 800 mm pipes. The current proposal of 500 mm pipe for Croom involves the extension of trunk mains system from Patrickswell towards Croom. This will involve the installation of 800 mm Ø pipe along the dual carriageway corridor at Patrickswell to Attyflin Junction (to be constructed under Adare Patrickswell Trunk main Contract) and thereafter a 500 mm Ø link along N20 towards Croom.
The new water supply will connect to the existing distribution system of Croom WSS. The scheme requires the transfer of potable water from Newcastle Reservoir to a location in Croom for gravity distribution to Croom town and then the existing raw water source taken out of service.
The Croom water supply is by gravity feed from Ballygeale via a 500mm diameter ductile iron main to a pumping station locating at south skirt of the town for lift to a reservoir located on Tullovin Hill via a 300mm ductile iron rising main. The reservoir proposed for Tullovin Hill will provide for 24-hour storage to serve Croom and its environs under gravity. The reservoir will connect to the existing distribution network via a 300mm diameter ductile iron main.
The trunk mains have been designed for optimum hydraulic performance and the reservoir has been designed to accommodate 24hour storage capacity to cater for the predicted demand. The pumping station may offer some opportunity for alternative design but detailed design for the sizing of the pumps has been prepared to give optimum operational conditions for the Council.
From this point of view the PPP Assessment report concluded that the scheme should not be procured as a PPP type of Contract but should be procured as a Traditional Form of Contract.
The estimated cost for the scheme as in Water Services Investment Programme 2007-2009 is €5.84million.
