Limerick County Trunk Watermain – East Limerick Link

The Limerick County Trunk Watermain – East Limerick Link was included in the 2006-2008 Water Services Investment Programme as a scheme to advance through planning.

Nicolas O’Dwyer Consulting Engineers were appointed in September, 2007 by Limerick County Council to prepare a Preliminary report.

The project relates to the development of a Trunkmain system for East Limerick extending from the city boundary at Ballysimon to Oola. The area excludes the towns and villages of Caherconlish, Murroe, Boher, Cappamore, Kilteely, Dromkeen, Pallasgreen, Oola and Doon, together with the surrounding districts.

The area which has a population of approximately 12,000 persons is currently served by a number of different public water and group schemes which have distinct sources but which do have some strategic interlinking to avail of spare capacities when available. The existing schemes currently have limitations in meeting demand, and in a number of areas, ongoing problems with water quality.

The key objectives of the East Limerick Link Mains scheme project are:

  • Examine the water storage and distribution requirements of the area.
  • Identify the most cost effective solution to cater for the future demand levels up to the year 2032
  • Provide the basis for detailed design such that the optimum solution is procured in accordance with the best value for money

The Capital cost estimate of the solution scheme at 2008 values is €35.4 million.

The Preliminary report was submitted to the Department of Environment, Heritage & Local Government in November, 2008.
